Women rights

Fighting violence against women

Many barriers favor violence against women in Cameroon. While working in rural areas, CEFASE realized concrete actions need to be carried on while taking into consideration local realities. The first phase of the project in Lomakeng, Nyodo, Ngat and Messak focuses on the identification with the traditional leaders of socio-cultural obstacles that favor violence against women, identification of different forms of violence against women, definition with traditional leaders and community leaders of strategies to encourage behavior change, community mobilization of women rights as stipulated in the covenant on the elimination of all forms of discrimination against women et teaching peaceful conflict resolution to couples.

Empowerment of women’s organizations on women rights

Each year, CEFASE selects 10 women’s organization whose leaders are trained on the covenant on the elimination of all forms of discrimination against women. The program started this 2011 in February. Organizations were selected and the leaders trained in April with an obligation to restitute the training to all the members of their various groups. Since May, CEFASE technical team is following up the restitution in the organization’s whose leaders were trained. At the end of the restitution, each organization will write a project on the promotion of women rights in one of their villages and CEFASE will help them searching for funds.

N.B.: 10 orphans out of the 25 sponsored by CEFASE graduated last year from the secondary school and could no more benefit of CEFASE assistance. 10 other were identified and after case study, 05 of them were added to assisted orphans.

Community mobilization on girl child education

The East region of Cameroon is one of the priority areas of education. As it can be seen in the following statement from the regional Delegate of Basic Education of the East region of the country, the societal role of the girl child is maternity: «The stone we have in our shoes is the problem of girl child education and that of the Bakas and Bororos in particular due to early marriages and pregnancies, socio-cultural barriers. Here, woman is for maternity. Whatever her age is, when she is pregnant, it is normal. » While looking carefully at this statement, it is clear that girl child education is not compulsory and consequently is not known in the East region as a right that needs to be respected. Parents prefer to send boys to school, leave girls in homes or send them in earlier marriage whatever their age is and this without their consent.

The Campaigns are organized in villages of this region to mobilize the population on the importance of girl child education.
